Saw this when it was on Sky Arts. I was hoping they might do similar programmes with other guitarists, but I've never seen any more appear. Did anyone else start drooling in the Monteleone section, or was it just me?

Seriously ? Mark Knopfler ? " One of the greatest guitar players of all time " This bloke is a mate of his, right ? There are probably a thousand guitar players in Brazil who are decades better than Knopfler This guy means that Knopfler is " One of the greatest guitar players of all time " in Dire Straights, right ? Mark Knopfler ain't even in the same room as Su !
There are probably a thousand guitar players in Korea better than Mark Knopfler. Knopfler is a good guitar player. The bloke describing him is well out of order. Let's be realistic or speech becomes meaningless.

An interesting point of view, colan, and I agree to a certain extent about the hyperbole. I see you managed to find the Tommy Emmanuel of Brazilian guitarists - why play a melody when you can obscure any tune by throwing in a million notes to show how clever you are@ Left me cold, I'm afraid. As for Su, yes, all very good and all that, but I don't think it's anything beyond what Knopfler could do.. AND they both did it sitting down, and didn't sing while they were doing it. But, of course, the thing that sets Knopfler apart and makes him better than these two examples, is that he wears a sweatband and these two don't. Case closed, M'lud

The concept of "Greatest" or "Great" is difficult to define - well impossible really.
There are so many good guitarists and some play in a way that can connect with me in some way, but will leave other listeners unimpressed. Conversely there are lots of guitar players that are held in very high regard that leave me totally cold.
How is greatest measured? By technical ability? By emotional feel? Even what scales / modes a player gravitates to can have an effect and draw in some listeners while leaving others cold. I know for sure I am moved on an emotional level by a fair number of guitarists who are not technically great - but for the purposes of my own enjoyment they are great.
I think I maybe feel Knopfler is a better player than others might feel because the musical influences he brings to his note choices and style of playing chime with my own preferences.
So it really all boils down to a player might be "one of the players I have most enjoyed hearing" rather than being the "greatest".
Mark

Exactly so- as Leo's post illustrates- so any claim of ' the greatest of all time ' is so highly subjective as to be unworthy of serious consideration. In Martin's thread- which precedes this topic- we can't even agree upon what's actually ' advanced ', let alone ' greatest '. acousticsoundboard.co.uk/thread/3632/good-guitaristI'm certainly not knocking ol' Knopfler- just shrinking heads. Hey, good name for a band ? Leo; I shall certainly appeal

So on this premise I could call myself the greatest beginner guitarist of all time

I get the point and agree that rating anyone as the greatest guitarist is just fundamentally wrong.
Missing the point, to me Mr Knopfler is great and I would rather listen to him over Su and other above any day. Music should be about how it sounds. Its technically difficult is largely irrelevant. What music you like is of course completely subjective.
As a guitarist he has played with and sometimes outplayed the best of them For example with Chet:
Or Eric (Eric wins on the best suit contest)
To me he plays just enough and never too much.
Oh and love telegraph road, all 14 minutes. Not sure SU would knock this out without a little practice:
