Hi All, I hope that this finds you all well. Just a wee update on the mandolin that I've been making. I'm just going to call it a Taran Mandolin, I have plans to make an A5 style mandolin at some point as well. This one is an arch top - flat back mandolin which similar to my Bouzoukis in construction with the Portuguese Guitar/Sobell neck joint. This is just a prototype to hear how it goes and then I'll make the required changes for another. Exciting stuff!! The materials are: Indian Rosewood Back and Side Italian Spruce Soundboard Reclaimed Brazilian Mahogany neck and will have a Gibson style neck graft in Indian Rosewood on the back of the head stock. All the very best for now, Rory www.taranguitars.co.ukwww.facebook.com/taran.guitarsOne of the Bouzoukis I make. Here's the Portuguese Guitar Style neck, the actual neck runs through under the sound board and the sides hold the heel and neck in place. This is in Cocobolo and German Spruce.

Looking good!
I'm sure it would stowaway nicely into the Road Trip guitar box as I believe I may have mentioned previously.....

Looking good Rory. I'll enjoy watching this develop. Your bouzouki is a work of art, so if this is similar it will be very special.
I'll also be very interested if you go ahead with your carved top/back varieties...

That bouzouki is stunning! That makes me keen to see how the mandolin develops. "Portugese neck" sounds rather like a medical condition though. Mark

Hi All, Its been a while but I found a few evenings over the last 6 weeks to get the Mandolin ready for the spray booth. I'm going to get some videos done at the end of the month of it. All the very best for now, Rory www.taranguitars.co.ukwww.facebook.com/taran.guitars

Hi All, My First Mandolin is now finished and off to do some rehearsals with Karen Matheson via Matheu Watson. I had my very good friend, Kevin Macleod up yesterday as he was very keen to try it, we did some videos which I will post as soon as I get them. Sound wise, I'm very pleased with it. Full ringing trebles and strong balanced bass which is what I wanted. I'm offering these at £1399 base price. If you would like more details please do get in touch. All the very best, Rory Taran Guitars www.taranguitars.co.ukwww.thewoodshop.scot

Looks gorgeous ... fairly confident that the videos/soundclips will confirm that it sounds as good as it looks...

Very nice indeed, Rory! The usual stunning good looks and the wood looks amazing. I love the back plate running into the neck (where do I recognise that feature from? ). As I said before, I really like the soundhole shape, which suits the top curvature IMO. Is your logo missing from the headstock? The tailpiece is very nice, and the only thing I'd change would be the tuners Maybe I'll get to try it sometime I'm looking forward to hearing it in action.

Thank guys!
Yes the tuners are the first change, going with the Schaller Grand Tune in nickel and rosewood for the next ones, oh and a t. on the headstock...
It will be here after the middle of April, would be great to see you both.
Very best,
Rory
