You'll be pleased to know, Akquarius that the 'frailing guitar' workshop at Halifax will be heavily based on Mr Baughman's teachings

Blimey! The picture before the film started reminded me of Rab C Nesbitt, or Father Jack. He is a great teacher though. I did a bit on his clawhammer course when I first made the mistake of getting a steel string guitar. Next time I do clawhammer it will be on nylon, and no worries about truss rods with those funny tunings.
He likes to give the impression of being a farmer type person with his overalls and his "hoe hand" problems, but I'm guessing he's really a lawyer by trade; a lawyer with an interest in theology. He hints at it on the comments below, and elsewhere.

Thanks for this thread Leo - I like that series of Lessons .... I can understand them and it all makes sense straight away. So THAT'S what Orkney tuning is about. Mark I'm pleasantly surprised the TW73 managed down to C on the 6th string so well.

He's a great player, but he really shouldn't do video when he's utterly baked.

He is indeed a lawyer and has an interest in the philosophy of religion. The following extract from the introduction to THIS BOOK explains: "Steve Baughman is a graduate student in philosophy at San Francisco State University. He has practiced law in San Francisco for over two decades. In addition to his law degree, Steve holds a Master's Degree (U.C. Berkeley). Steve is interested in philosophy of religion as it pertains to the central doctrines of Christianity. (Read: he is a skeptic about Christianity.) He lives in San Francisco." The Orkney Tuning video certainly conveys his artistry, enthusiasm and communication skills, the ingredients for any good teacher. I love his music but struggle with frailing, so am very much looking forwards to the tutorial at Halifax next month by our revered banjoista, Martin! Brian

He's a very good 'conventional' fingerstylist, too. He does some interesting collaborations with Robin Bullock. I really like this piece, although it's not in Orkney tuning.

Looking at the book that you mention, I bet he's just as good at communicating on the 'problem of evil' as he is at guitar. Thanks for that information brianr2. Hope you enjoy Martin's course.
