Just a quick update, I'm part way through the finishing process. The finish is slowly going on, it's one of those two steps forward one back jobs, you apply some finish let it dry then sand most of it off before putting some more on. When it's all on I'll let it harden then rub it back to 12000 grit, then rotten stone, so a while yet. Then it's bridge, saddle and nut, and its job done. So consult Euterpe, and get your entry up! Isn't wood just the badger's nadgers.
Just snaffled some old scaffolding boards for some shelves. They've come up beautifully after a touch of a plane and some sanding.
This guitar's ok too...

Isn't wood just the badger's nadgers. Yes, yes it is. The natrual patterns are just something else! Nothing comes close. There is a guy who makes furniture for my local bike cafe from reclaimed timber, I'm seriously considering getting him to make me a stool with guitar stand built in, along these lines: But more along these lines:

The finish is all on, just a bit of a wait now before I rub out the finish, then it's bridge, nut, saddle and Robert's your mother's brother. So probably at least another couple of weeks for the snipers! And, I haven't checked my Paypal recently to see who has left the biggest bribe. I'll post some pics soon. Colin

Well I've waited long enough, so today I have spent an arm aching time rubbing out the finish. When it's applied it is pretty level, so just needs a fine leveling and polish to a lustre. I do this with micromesh abrasives working wet and going successively from 1800 grit through 2400, 3200, 3600, 4000, 6000, 8000 and finally 12000. The first two are the ones that actually level the surface, following that each grit removes the scratch marks of the previous one and adds a polish to the finish.
And after a lot of work we end up with this.
My aim is not to produce one of those buffed to within an inch of its life factory high gloss finishes, where it looks like the guitar was dipped in plastic, but to get a country house polished for 300 years patina. I still want it to look like wood.
Oh, and the case has arrived so here it is occupying the spare room as a valued guest should.
If you haven't yet entered.......

Colin It looks absolutely beautiful Colin. I assume the next step is to remove the finish where the bridge is to be glued then tuning machines, strings and it's finished Regards Phil

Yes Phil, next step is the bridge, that will be made from Brazilian Rosewood, then as you say carefully remove the finish where it will go and glue it on with hide glue, then tuners on, saddle, nut, do the final set up. I haven't listened to any of the entries so far, so that'll be the last thing to do. Oh and check my paypal to see who has left the biggest bribe. Should be off my hands before Christmas.
Scotch I'd certainly get it in in the next week or two, I'll give you all a few days warning of entries closing.
