Went with friends to SS at Mansfield Palace (yes, there is a palace in Mansfield). I reckoned this had been my 5th SS concert over the years in various disguises including Maddy and the Girls etc. Maddy never ceases to amaze with her vocals. OK, maybe only 95% as pure as they were but still to die for. Only noticeable struggle was a bit on Gaudete where the vocal is of course totally exposed and she still did amazingly well with the odd wobble.
The band was excellent, with Rick Kemp his usual quirky self. The fiddle player was a girl called Jessie May Smart who was as easy of the eye as on the ear, a lovely player. The gig list had a bit of overflavour of Wintersmith for me (to be fair it was advertised as such) but I don't find that album as rewarding as others. But interspersing with some old favorites (Thomas the Rhymer, Black Jack Davy etc) made for an excellent evening. I look forward to their next gig!
