I'll be the first to admit that I find the whole fake vocal harmony a tad cheesy but the other day, against the wife's advice over the bank balance, I went ahead and bought the TC Electronics Harmony singer pedal just to see if there was any chance it could be used in my setup. I use other pedals with my acoustic setup and my thinking was that if I use other ambient devices (reverb and echoe) then I should give it a chance.
The pedal uses your guitar chords to generate vocal harmony but does not affect the guitar signal or any effects. This means that you can add reverb and harmony to your vocal sound independant of anything else you are doing on the guitar, and it works. The pedal is easy to use and offers a range of harmonies (3rds, 5ths above and below etc) as well as studio quality reverb. Of particular interest is a button which, and don't ask me how, seems to magically EQ the voice together with compression and de-ess.
In use I was really surprised at how good this little unit is. Firstly, the harmonies are great but, and it's a big but, they have to be used sparingly and I have set the effect level right down at about 25% so that it is hardly noticeable but does indeed lift the right song. When I looked at reviews of this product it is clear that they set the level much higher to showcase the harmony but really I think it needs to be lower in the mix.
I'm glad I bought this because even without the harmony the reverb and EQ is stunning. I will use it live and see what happens.
Still, I made the wife laugh when I wapped up the harmony signal level and launched into my best attempt at 'Kumbaya my Lord' - LOL

I seem to remember guitbrett using something similar (or possibly even the same!) If you're a solo artist I can see the benefits but, like loop pedals, they need to be used sparigly, as you say, or the effect/impact is lost.
