I went to see Hudson and Cutler at the Boston Folk Club on Monday night. Man, that Ian Cutler is one smokin' fiddler ! The fiddle , by its very nature, lights up performances by any folk band but this chappie shines. Not a bum note all evening- not one- and I dare say he played the fastest fiddle I've ever heard. I'm not exaggerating to say that his speed and technique was superior to any US player I've heard and some of those dudes have been down to the fiddle crossroads. Apart from bloody Hava Nagila- which is always an overstated piece of folk kitch no matter who touts it- and a badly rocked up version of that lovely Sean McCarthy song Step it out Mary the repertoire was terrific. Nobody is perfect. The guitar half of the duo, Hudson, is a powerful off-beat strummer and very accurate so the blend of the two instruments works superbly. They don't actually need to sing anything but there are few clubs, one imagines , that would book folkies sans lyrics . Nevertheless, the musicianship was quite remarkable and you should tip an ear to Ian Cutler first chance you get- if you haven't already. Me, I've never heard him before and I was far too interested in Britt Ekland's naked dance in The Wicker Man to notice that there was a fiddle playing at all. However, that was Ian Cutler. Lucky bugger as well as a smokin' fiddler.
