When you are still a novice at FP its a real bugger
I love Hesitation Blues
I recall Andy Howell playing a great version of this at Halifax which stiffened my resolve to try harder and I have now found this Will Fly how to play it Vid on you tube
so onwards and upwards thanks for the inspiration Andy

I originally learnt this from some kind of tab based on Jorma Kaukonen's (Hot Tuna) playing. As he was playing as part of a band/duo his arrangement was a little simpler and had space for other instruments. I used to play a lot at the time with a mandolin player and this makes sense to me. It was probably that version I used in Halifax although there are endless intricacies you can add from Rev Gary David, Ralph Mctell and so on. The tab for this version is here: www.guitaretab.com/k/kaukonen-jorma/23896.htmlHere is a video of him playing it. Personally, I'd recommend learning the easiest version, getting the speed up and then thinking about how you can tackle the harder versions— this later stage is probably easier using your ears and fingers than by following a tab!

There's an awful lot of truth in the thread title. I'm afraid I haven't much more to add. Good luck!

Good vid there from Will Fly, but for me it's a lot easier to use a thumbover for F and Fm in this piece, as indeed Jorma does in Andy's vid.
Stick with it Paul - you'll get there - just picking through the shapes without too much attempt at the melody is a reasonable way to start, then you can add in the melody and frills bit by bit!

Great title for the thread. The video is well presented and very clear. On the plus side he's open to flexibility on using fingering that suits the player best! I was sort of encouraged recently to see Tony McManus say he wouldn't be accepted as a proper fingerstyle player in the U.S.A. because he can't do the "alternate bass thing" in a more complex way. One of the few things my guitar playing has in common with his! If failing to be a proper fingerstyle player means being as good as Tony McManus I'd settle for that. Mark
