I have acquired a Mandolin!!! Found it up on sale on the works site. Selling cheap because it was gathering dust and no one wanted to learn it. So I pounced on the deal Here she is Also realised there is now getting less and less space as I have acquired two instruments within 6 days. It's fair to say now I'm in the bad books with the missus. But I do have a Mandolin Here is half of the family Chris

Good work, Chris. Of course, now you have to decide whether to tune it DGAE or DGAD.... Maybe you should just get another one so you don't have to keep retuning. Explain that, with the number of broken strings that will entail, it'll be cheaper in the long run

Congrats Chris - you'll have a lot of fun with your mando I'm sure! (If you can squeeze your fingers in that is.)

Thanks folks. Pretty much a struggling to play as my arm is swollen like a balloon from a tattoo and the the tiny frets with higher string tension doesnt make it easier. But enjoyed what I did play of it. It's making me want an octave mandolin, it is a different instrument so maybe could make it a good reason to buy one Tuning wise I don't have a clue about, just been playing in G D A E take that is the standard tuning? Wild Violet that guitar is a Faith FJ. Bought it about 4 years ago now mainly use it now for standard tuning. I think it's a great guitar and so are all the other faiths. I prefer bigger sounds so decided to get a jumbo and in the mid price range it was either a Faith or an Alvarez but the Faith had a £200 discount from the RRP so had to buy it.

I find GDAE easiest for tunes as the intervals between the strings are the same, and also it's easier to reach the high B that some tunes inconveniently incorporate. GDAD is great for droney strummage with two fingered shapes on the wound strings and open plain string drones. You can still play tunes of course, but for me it loses the intuitiveness of GDAE, and that 7th fret B becomes a 9th fret b then! Keith

Pretty much a struggling to play as my arm is swollen like a balloon from a tattoo ermmmm .... it oughtn't to be! Might I suggest that you visit a local health clinic to check for infection? Some slight swelling can be expected for a couple of days - but only slight, and only for a couple of days.

They can be dodgy things, these tattoos. I got this musical one 'cos I'm, like, an awesomely brilliant guitarist and that Didn't turn out as fabulous as I'd hoped

I got the tattoo done on monday but it covers the entire of my forearm so the worst part really for my strumming hand.

and I see it's a forearm sleeve (very nice, too) - that might explain it!
