A couple of days before Xnas, I decided on some changes in my guitar/bass collection.
I thought, nothing'll sell until the new year but put a load stuff on Gumtree, anyway.
Blimey, was I wrong. Between the 22nd of Dec and today, I've managed to sell 3 electrics and one bass.
2 before the big day and 2 after. Unbelievable!
I had to buy 2 guitars, to get over the shock. One was the Fender US Deluxe Strat, as seen on the other thread.
Today I managed to acquire a MusicMan Silhouette Special.
I'm a very big fan of Musicman guitar ( & basses too). I've owned a couple of Lukes, before.
Which are wonderful guitars but come with EMG pickups, which are the very clean and powerful but to my ears, a little too clean. Fortunately the Silhouette Special comes with DiMarzios. Much more to my taste. Loud and a bit snarly.
It also comes with and alder body and, rather unusually, an all-rosewood neck.
Schaller locking tuners, my faves and a very smooth MM trem system.
I suppose it's Musicman's closest guitar to a Strat Sharing a lot of features, with my American Deluxe Strat.
So what's the difference? Most obviously, to my ears, is the tone. The Silhouette has a slightly thicker sound with a little more edge, to the tone. I wouldn't say better, just a fair bit different.
The Fender has more variety, with it's added, S1 switching.
Playability is about evens. Both very comfy and to my taste. And like with the Strat, I had 10s replace the 9s and the action raised a tad, on te MM.
Build quality is very good on both but I have been so bold enough, in the past, to say that Musicman build the best guitars in the world and I'm stiil there on that opinion. They are just so well designed and put together.
Looks are personal but I just love the Metallic Sky Blue Finish, with Tortoiseshell Pickguard. That, with the rosewood neck, just makes this a real looker, to my eyes.
It sounded very well through the Hughes & Kettner combo, in the shop and even better, through my Blackstar set up, at home. Simply put, it's a bloody brilliant guitar.
