"Mike Nesmith, yes he of Monkee fame, mother was a multi millionaire"
Many years ago, I bought the book Total Control, The Mike Nesmith Monkees Story. Great read if you are into Nesmith. Tells the whole story of the "Tipex" etc. Also the start of MTV.

Just came across this in a post on a hifi forum about how formulaic country has become, how true for a lot of modern Nashville stuff I particularly like the guitar solo they make from 3different guitar bits!

Just came across this in a post on a hifi forum about how formulaic country has become, how true for a lot of modern Nashville stuff I particularly like the guitar solo they make from 3different guitar bits! Cool video but has become!
I watched something recently about Nashville and how Waylon Jennings couldn't get a record out as he wanted to use his own songs, own musicians etc, everything was controlled by the record companies who wanted just that formulaic output using their own studio musicians. There has been plenty of criticism of it from within the country music community (e.g. George Jones, Tammy Wynnette...). There's plenty of dross within any genre of music as well as plenty of good stuff. Personally, I think this is one of the most moving performances I've come across in the whole Youtubedom...

What 007 said above I'm a huge fan of country music. Much of what I play and listen to I consider country music - Steve Earle, Asleep at the Wheel, Townes Van Zandt, Joe Ely, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, The Tractors, Johnny Cash, David Grier (and all the flat-pickers... that bluegrass is pure country), my all time fav guitar player Jerry Reed, Elvis... Not always keen on Country and Western, mind.

Its very difficult isn't it to compartmentalise music into genre's I googled what is the difference between country and western and country music "There is no difference between Country and the "Country" in "Country & Western"-its the same thing. However, the term "Country & Western" was a trade paper term (Billboard, Cashbox, etc.) used to chart sales and airplay of two musics that had similar audiences, much like "Rhythm & Blues". Western refers to artists like Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, The Sons of the Pioneers, Red Steagall, Sons Of The San Joaquin, Michael Martin Murphy, etc.-in other words, Cowboy music and folk songs like Streets of Laredo, Buffalo Skinners, etc. " And then there was this cowboyoutfitters.com/westernmusic.html

Hardly formulaic... I play Time the revalator loads and do actually have quite bit of country in my cd collection, I know it's not all formulaic but a lot of the more mainstream commercial stuff often is as demonstrated wonderfully by the vid, although as someone rightly pointed out on another forum you could most probably make a very similar vid out of folk, blues, heavy metal etc etc!

People over here (in the UK) keep telling me my stuff is "country" and I always feel deeply insulted.

Adge Cutler and The Wurzels, real country music!
I remember the first time I heard "Harper Valley P.T.A." and the horrible realization part way through that it was'nt a joke. There are however really bad songs/performances in every genre. Remember that comedian who brought out a single- "Atmosphere". The same horrible realization that there was to be no comedy and that it was simply a really, really naff record. I do have some country music in my collection. The Louvin Brothers. If you listen to them you can hear where the Everlys came from. I also have Dolly Parton's "Little Sparrow" album which is rather splendid. I think the problem many people have with Counrty is that there is a greater amount of unplanned self-parody than in most other genres. I used to know an Englishman who wore a string tie and cowboy hat whist singing "All my exe's live in Texas". He became annoyed when people laughed.....
