OK, I'm not a great fan of 'country music' which I accept has many facets and this is a generalisation.
I went with friends last night to a local country music club where the main act was The Haley Sisters (from Yorkshire, not that this matters!). Good musicians, good voices and backed by a phenomenal guitarist, Brian Smith. And before I ask my question, I very much enjoyed their set; entertaining, professional and 'good time'. They played a lot of Emmy Lou, Dolly and a wide range of other mainly American covers.
Below is them singing Tom Paxton's 'Last Thing on my Mind' and, although if you'd never heard the original you might actually like it as a jolly country song, the 'country style' treatment making it into a bouncy yee-ha number was a great shame; unless you like this sort of thing.
Come on country fans, tell me I'm missing out by not appreciating it.

I don't think you're necessarily missing anything, John. I suppose you like what you like, and if country doesn't float your boat, that's fair enough. I used to think it was the worst genre of music, but through prolonged exposure to various different artists and crossover material, I really like large sections of what you might term country music.
For what it's worth, I thought that rendition of TLTOMM was pretty faithful to the feel of the original anyway.

Just listened to both versions and enjoyed them both. They say a well written song will sound good in any style. Take Ace of spades by Motörhead. I'm not a big fan of Motörhead but when I heard them do a bluesy version of their own song ace of spades I really enjoyed it. Nothing like the original. The Halely Sisters put a country spin on the original and did a good job in my opinion. Each to their own.

FFJ - I think I have that same feeling as you about the jolly bouncy aspect. For me in this case it cuts down the depth of feeling in the words that comes over in the original. That's not to say I didn't like the "country" version by the Haley Sisters - just that it affected me in a different way. I'm not particularly keen on the pigeonholing of artists / types of song into genre but with what I am led to believe typifies "country" music I think that overall it's a genre I've never felt drawn to - to a large degree because I've often found that when a strong emotional content IS being put across it feels overdone to me - like adding sweetener to sugar. It pains me to say that the Alison Krauss / James Taylor video above is like that for me, though I'll fully agree with it having "great melodies , perfect harmonies and consummate musicians" But my loss, and probably just shows I'm emotionally repressed!  With apologies to those of you who, for very good reasons, like country music. Mark |

There is a huge spectrum to country music and whilst I have experienced the emotions stated by others in this thread I have been more and more drawn to it although i accept that
some of the songs can be mawkish and immature.
A lot of mainstream music had its feet in country music. The Everlys early music was/is defined as country music. Gram Parsons a one time Byrd and FB Bros member wrote some great Country songs and
A lot of Jonny Cash is country gospel as is Alison Krauss . It also encompasses Western Swing/Bakersfield sound, Hillbilly,Bluegrass, Honky Tonk,Nashville Rockabilly so a really wide
base.
Country Rock played by a lot of American Bands was massive in the late 60's 70's before prog rock took over. The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Grateful dead,Eagles, CCR,Many English bands/singers also had big hits with country music, Rolling Stones, George Harrison
And don't get me started on Southern Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allmans, Tom Petty. Its a very wide genre in the same way that Rock and Roll encompasses a huge base of root music
There is some country music I do not like and some i love its the same with Rock and roll.

(which I preferred to the original, whatever that indicates)

Hey Mark,
Great call on MIke Nesmith. I have most of his music, and his Hits Just Keep on Coming album (you can pick it up so cheap on CD) with just him and O J Red Rhodes on Pedal Steel is a really great album. Great Music is great music whatever genre of music.
When I think of the musicianship of Marty Stuart(one of the finest B Bender players out there), Vince Gill and many other, boy, I just love listening to those guys.
Saying that, I love and can appreciate the music from Michael jackson, Prince to Tony Rice, Nitty Gritty Dirt band and the list goes on. I only wish that Clarence White got to complete his country album. TLTOMM would have been great.
