I was having a chat with my old friend ocarolan about this splendid forum and I found myself confessing... Here is my unexpurgated coming out declaration: The talk about types of wood, width of nuts, tension of strings, depth of tone, etc makes me realise just how ignorant I am about an instrument I've allegedly been playing for 50 years. I've never considered any of these things before. I'm so undiscerning it's quite alarming! Listening to members' tunes in the Plucky Duck brings home to me the fact that I've been very undisciplined in my approach to finger-picking. It may surprise you, and even appall you (!), that I can't even use my third plucking finger. Right, I feel better for that.

Confession is good for the soul they say. But then they also say fight fire with fire. Didn't do my career as a fireman any good. Apologies to Harry Hill for that piece of theft.I'll admit I've been shocked at the amount of new knowledge and ways of thinking I've had to take on board about acoustic guitar and acoustic instruments since joining the forum just over a year ago. As far as finger picking goes I'm still making it up as I go along and I make no progress at all with any, now dust covered, instructional books on acoustic playing. Mark

It may surprise you, and even appall you (!), that I can't even use my third plucking finger. Libba Cotten only used her first... Third fingers are usually only used by instrumentalists trying to make their vids look interesting !

Shocking day when one stops learning...
I'm just trying not to dwell too much on the days of wine, roses and complacency I've let slip re guitar.
Ho hum...

On the plus side now you are aware of all these different tone woods, nut widths, scale lengths, string tensions etc etc you now know you probably need more guitars in order to cover all bases!

It took me 3 years to bother to look what model of guitar I'd bought, and I've still no idea what it's made out of...if I were to guess I'd say it was wood but I could be wrong.

After realising I was totally ignorant about the differing woods used on guitars, I had a bit of a read about the whole matter. I was pleasantly surprised that I found it all rather interesting! www.dawsons.co.uk/blog/acoustic-guitar-tonewood-types - a bit of a beginners guide to the qualities of tonewoods. Perfect for me since I wasn't even aware of the term 'tonewood'. Or some slightly more in-depth stuff about how tonewood is made: tonewood.ca/servicepage.htmNo longer will I have to endure moments of embarrassment when someone knows more about my guitar after first glance than I do after 7 years of owning it!

Since joining this forum I've often felt like the Sleeping Beauty. Everyone is so knowledgeable compared to me, I must have been asleep for a hundred years to have preserved my mind so pure and empty of knowledge.
