So I've booked this - www.halswaymanor.org.uk/portal/alias__Halsway/lang__en/tabid__4461/eventid__656/default.aspx- which will mean spending a whole weekend not in Missionary Tuning. In my defence I should add that Ben Walker is a superb (Fylde) player in several tunings, Halsway Manor is only a few miles away on the other side of the Quantocks, and Josienne Clarke will be there too. I'd probably best swot up a bit on the few tunes I can play in the DT..... Keith

Excellent! Sounds like a lot of fun, Keith. Hopefully not too much like hard work, though (I noticed the words 'intensive' and 'advanced' ) Maybe you'll come back extolling the virtues of DADGAD and mocking us poor 'standard' tuning peasants! Just make sure there's some medicine on hand should things become too difficult...

DADGADzooks - ooooh "intensive" and "advanced" could have me running for the hills, but I'm sure you'll sail along fine. Have a great time!

I'm certainly not intending to work hard! I'm relying on there being at least a couple of compulsive show-offs attending who'll be a distraction. You know, the ones who when they were at school almost jumped upright when putting their hands up, clicking their fingers and going "Sir! Sir! Ask me Sir!"
I'm hanging on the word "intermediate" and reading it as "intermediate blagger in EADGBE who thinks DADGBE is pretty exotic and who knows b*gg*r *ll about D*DG*D" . We'll see how right I am ....or not! Ben is such a superb player and arranger that I'm sure he can tailor his input to whoever turns up!
If all else fails I'll resort to sitting at the back and miming....and The Glenlivet is a splendid idea!
And there's the Saturday evening concert with Ben and the amazingly wonderful Josienne Clarke to look forward to! I've missed these two on the couple of previous occasions when they've been in the area, largely cos I wasn't at the times concerned, and have always wanted to see and hear them in live performance.
Unsure of the full timetable yet, but may have to nip home for other commitments at a couple of points, so may not even go "residential" but dip in and out. We'll see!

It does say it's for those who wish to explore DADGAD ... which suggests your interpretation is correct, Keef. I'm sure it'll be a blast - and not a bad price either, I reckon, for full board for a weekend with tuition included!

This looks brilliant. If you are worried about deviating from the missionery position, you could always try laying back and thinking of Somerset.
Of course, DADGAD is only the first skid on a slippery slope of a whole range of open tunings - go on, you know you want to have a go at Open C, D, E......
Have a great time. I look forward to a review of how you get on and to hearing the fruits of your education in the Plucky Duck.

Hi,
Looks like a great course and I may have even considered going if I wasn't on hol; it also I think would considerably stretch my ability.
What is also interesting is that I've looked at the rest of their programme; not only are there some interesting weekends but the prices they are charging are significantly below the weekend 'retreat' I went on last year in the Cotswolds i.e. approx. £350 versus approx. £210. I've signed up for their emails and will take a look.
Thanks. Please let us have a report when you've been.

Looks great Keith! DADGAD is a lot of fun, although I make no claims to knowing the tuning very well - I just use it for some tunes. The guys who do know the tuning well do some great stuff accompanying trad tunes.

Sounds great! I'm sure you'll enjoy that a lot, Keith.
After all, who cares for standards when you can have it all open, all modal, dude ;D

Nice book. Recommended if you're looking for traditional arrangements. The arrangements are not too complicated, but the melody line is sometimes tricky. Even the CD is definitely worth listening.
