Some of you might be interested in this harp-lute-guitar which I was given a loan of for four days. I made this video after one day. Invented by Edward Light, it has six strings on the fretboard, and quite a few off the fretboard. Light also wrote a tutor for it. Quite a pleasant sound, I thought. The instrument is in perfect condition, and is for sale at £4,000, way beyond what I would pay for one.

My main instrument is: probably needing new strings

That is a pleasant sound, Rob. Nicely played - as with so many instruments with added sub-bass strings, it seems the trick is to use them sparingly... but £4K? Seems a tad extreme. Dave White makes harp guitars, and has made a lute ... so...

Yes, 4 Grand is a lot, but it is 180 years old, and in perfect condition. Also quite rare. I enjoyed my time with it for a few days, but it's not something I'm willing to sell everything I own for.

Lovely sound (tone and resonance) that seems to combine best features of harp, lute and guitar, and a rather fine looking instrument too. Very tasteful musical arrangements by you there Rob.
The £4k price tag is quite eye watering though. I'm still trying to recover from the shock to my system of spending (in an act of madness) only just over a half of that amount last year for a single instrument.

Mark, the arrangements are not by me. They come from a tutor for this exact instrument, published 1810.

- I should have picked that up from your text and the video! Tastefully played as well though. I also missed noticing you'd said it's 180 years old. Looks like it's wearing well - better than me anyway and I'm only 1/3rd of its age. That's rather cool though - an instrument that old with a tutorial from the maker. Mark

So you've had this lute for one day when you recorded it? Makes me wonder what you two would be capable of after having had time for each other for a couple of weeks Thanks for sharing this video, Rob. I enjoyed it a lot !

Thanks, Bernd. It was not so different from playing a lute, which I've done for twenty-five years. The tuning was new, though.
