...and you could play cricket with it too! Like the look of the mahogany top version especially. Keith

I'm sorely tempted as they are only about 120 quid.

Goowoooon, you know you want to...
When Oscar Wilde said "I can resist anything except temptation", I am sure he had GAS (or SMDTD, in this case) in mind.

They apparently have them in a guitar shop in Glasgow, so I'll check 'em out more fully next time I'm over. I only had a brief go on one at the weekend, but the diatonic scale is pretty nice. You can more or less play anything and it sounds ok

I got one yesterday. Can't put the little bugger down. Twangy little piece of delight it is! Only enough frets for one octave, so all sorts of transpositions going on. £119 from GAK in Brighton, free next day delivery. Bargain!

My better half got one of these Merlins a couple of weeks ago. Much easier to play than the trad dulcimer, although not as long in scale / fret numbers. Good quality of sound for what it is and fun for a bit of impromptu acoustic jamming in D - nice having no wrong notes to hit! I'd certainly say better value than one of the cheaper starter type dulcimers. Mark

They're even cheaper now, at just a shade over £100. Might be worth penning a revised missive to Santa.... So, does anyone have the mahogany topped one? I wonder which is best

I wonder which is best It's the mahogany top version that my better half has - but not having heard the other one for real it's difficult to say which is best. There is both on show in the video below, but nearly all the video has the sound of the instrument masked by the talking. The bit at the beginning allows hearing just the spruce top and no talking and the bit right at the end the same with the mahogany. Mark

Why don't you get them both and tell me which is best? .... if I were to get both I think I'd have to rebrand the pair as My First Guitar Conkers Set. Then, after a game we'd know which was best.
