Some of you will know that my two daughters have, unbelieveably, maganaged to find actual paying jobs in the sphere they hoped to work in.. Hopeless is in Dundee, assistant curator of the University of Dundee museums collections and Heather has two jobs - archivist at the People's History Museum and also archivist for the Royal Northern College of Music. This coming weekend is the 'Strings Festival' at RNCM and, as part of the events leading up to the festival, a group of luthiers are working together to build a 'cello in a week'. It will be finished, but not 'finished' if you catch my drift.. Here's a photo of them at work: The plan is to have it ready (well, playable) for performances this weekend If Hevs gets any more pics, I'll load 'em up.

That's very cool, Leo! You must be proud of your daughters, working successfully in their chosen fields, not slaves to a paltry wage with no hope of rescue...
I hope this turbo-build is successful for the weekend!

A cello in a week is a pretty tall order! Hope it works out! And yes, any more pics would be welcome.

Hey Leo! A strings festival!
Wouldn't that be the perfect platform for you to give'em a few of your songs?
Perhaps the one about Mr. Grey, or "Meet Her At The Bar"?
Somehow I'm absolutely convinced that for some time you would draw 100% attention...

Martin I am, of course, very proud of 'em... but as for the wage slave thing - they are both at the mercy of grants and funders (which is why Heather has two part-time jobs) As we all know, Arts and Culture funding is usually the first to go... Akquarius, even if I did play in public, I'm afraid the Royal Northern College of Music takes it all rather more seriously than do I

Heather got up close and personal with the camera today (overcoming her innate shyness - she gets that from me, obviously) to get some great pics of the luthiers in action.. She says they're all really nice and willing to give their time to chat This is Helen Michetschlager, and with William Castle and Kai-Thomas Roth i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k596/leojroberts/IMG_1620_zpshfusrjfa.jpgTools of the trade...

Are you sure that it isn't a team of Oompa Loompas making a violin A bit like this Last thing I heard the Oompa Loompa workshop has a 17 year waiting list. As they are so small their attention to detail is unrivalled but it takes them a long time to lift parts. Also it takes them a lot of time to do things as they keep on breaking into song.

Looks a big on the large size, but that recess to allow it to be balanced on the thigh is a good innovation. I think they've messed up though - they should've drilled the soundhole and added the rosette before "closing the box".
