Just got back from first visit to Lanzarote and was very pleasantly surprised at how nice it was; beautifully clean and, if you got away from a couple of honeyspots with too many Irish Bars, the countryside was interesting and peaceful.
Of particular interest was the Timple museum in Taguise, a lovely inland town, which displayed over 50 variations of this Canarian instrument which is related to the Ukelele. The traditional style Timple has 5 strings, with the centre one tuned lowest. We heard them played by a 'band' which was a Lanzarote equivalent of a folk group.
We then found one of only 2 remaining makers still on the island and took a pic of him in his workshop which might be of interest to Dave and other Luthiers. The Timple retails locally (for these hand-made ones) for between £130 and £350, depending on the size, finish and decoration. the pic is like the more expensive ones. Some Timples are only a fraction of this size, much smaller than a Uke.
Here's an example of what it can sound like ...

That's a fine sound right enough! Interesting Tuning - but rather like the Uke I suppose - just adding a top D. Wonder how easy it is to get strings here? Mark

Lovely. Had it been me, I most probably would have come home with one, and it would have lain there unused for years and years. Like many other instruments I have acquired in recent years.

I was very tempted to buy but like you it would have probably not had any real play time. I've still got the Mandola I bought 3 years ago hanging up and pretty virginal. Still far too much to learn on guitar.
