I've had this antique Lachenal concertina for a while now, but haven't got around to sorting it. The handles fasten using thumbscrews into the wood of the instrument, but one doesn't screw in (no thread). I was advised to push a matchstick into the hole, cut it off flush, then screw the thumbscrew into it. I did that and it worked for a few minutes before coming out again leaving a hole. Anyone have any advice how to quickly and easily get this sorted so I can torture the family with my horrendous attempts at music with this wee box?

'Fraid I can't help, but just wanted to say the matchstick trick worked for me on my son's wardrobe door which had "mysteriously" become detached from its hinge.

Two matchsticks? Plus little wood glue too.
If that doesn't work you could drill the hole out cleanly, plug it with a piece of small dowel and redrill a suitable pilot hole for the screw.

Thanks for the input, fellas. Might try a combination of matchsticks and woodglue - drilling and plugging sounds a bit 'techy' for me

Martin,
Bamboo skewers that supermarkets sell are usually around 2-2.5mm in diameter and may match the hole better than matchsticks. As Keith says, glue it in - superglue will work if you don't have any wood glue.If you can drill a small pilot hole (1mm or 1.5mm) that will help when you screw in the thumbscrew.

Forget the matchsticks Martin, use a disposable lighter - you know it makes sense.

you can buy machine screw inserts and new thumbscrews that will fix it permanently. PM me if you need any more advice

Looks ideal, Gav. Are inserts relatively easy to fit?

Yep, done it on a couple of old boxes. You'll need to enlarge the old holes with a drill bit (I recommend a hand drill or a screwdriver and bit on a low torque setting not a power drill) The insert just screws in with a slot head driver (about electrical size), and the new thumbscrews fit inside the tube. The trick with a concertina is to preserve the air-tightness wherever possible!
