Keith, It seems to be a 19th Century style minstrel banjo with 7 strings. It would typically be tuned g-G-C-D-G-B-D, similar to a standard 'G banjo', but with the added two low G and C strings. I'm not sure if this is the tuning Sarah is using, but if so it allows a much greater range with access to lower registers. The downside is that the fretboard is wider and string spacing a lot tighter, meaning that it is harder to play cleanly and possible difficulties with the first string slipping off the bottom of the fingerboard during play. Makes her playing that much more impressive actually!  |

Fabulous playing and a great setting! I'd have enjoyed some harmonies from time to time to make the vocal more interesting...maybe the guys can't sing?!

HB - almost anything with Alison Krauss on gets my vote, even though the recent TranSesh was a bit stiltedly overinstrumentalised and formulaic. The individual musicianship was, however, as stunning as ever!
Martin - after your post I gave that banjo a really close look and could only make out 6 strings/tuners. Did a bit more searching and found this TranSesh one -
... looks like same banjo? If so, deffo 6. There's also a remark about it in the "comments" if you look at it on Youtube. There's more to these here banjos than I'd imagined!
I like the vid you posted better than this overarranged one I've just found. The sparseness on your one fits the song really well, and power chords on cello has to be a good thing!
