These are prototype 3 and 4 of my SJ. They will have larger soundholes and body depth change and the post-finish hacking around I did with No. 2. The tops are a 'private stock' bearclaw sitka spruce. One will be sent away for nitro and one will be French Polished. I went to see Roy Summerfield the other week and he sorted out my FP technique so I can't wait to get this one done.

I experimented with this enlarged headstock. The first SJ I made had a Martin sized and shaped headstock and it seemed a little out of proportion with the body to my eye. This isn't as tall as the tallest headstock I've measured, but it's close. I mounted the tuners closer to the edge than normal, which was accidental, but now I quite like it. I was told the headstock should resemble a face, and I'm actually quite attracted to girls with big ears! So just some minor repositioning on the next one.

Ahhh I have two weeks off! Some unusual (for me) builds started, as I'd run out of neck blanks. One is an SJ in brown oak, something about a fungus that makes it brown and more brittle. I had a few sheets of 3mm sawn veneer. That's a bit of an experiment. And I've talked about building a Spanish guitar for a couple of years now, first cut has been made, no turning back.
