Hi,
I'm looking for recommendations for spraying nitrocellulose clear coat to my acoustic guitars. I'm looking for a commercial operation who have experience with acoustics near Cambridgeshire/Suffolk.
Any recommendations gratefully received.
Mel.

The only professional finisher I know of in the UK is David Wilson, who does the finishes for Sobell guitars; so I imagine his work is excellent (but also very pricey too) but I don't know where in the country he is based. www.dwilsonguitars.com/en-gb/home.aspxHave you thought about finishing the guitar yourself Mel?

Hi Mel, commercial guitar finishers are like hen's teeth in the UK, that's why most guitar makers finish their guitars themselves. I sometimes use Bow finishing down in Surrey. They are very good and will finish in Nitrocellulose if you ask them nicely (and you don't mind a polyurethane undercoat). They have a lot of experience finishing guitars (25 years or so) and when I took two of my acoustics down to them this week there were a good number of other guitar maker's work down there.
You could always try to spray them yourself; If you want to go with Cellulose you can buy an aerosol can of it which will do 3 coats, or you could buy a whole HVLP system for less than it cost me to buy a spraygun for my compressor!
Like rthef said, why not French polish? It's easy to use and won't try to kill you like cellulose. Its not as durable as other finishes, but then neither is cellulose. I've seen 100 year old french polish finishes that have lasted better than 60 year old lacquer finishes!

To continue what Rich said, after receiving my first guitar with a FP shellac polish I've been really enjoying the feel of the instrument and it's more robust than I expected. I'd give Rob (rthef) a PM/call as he's a FP pro so he might have some tips!

Hi there, Thanks for the replies. I've not heard of those three places before so that's very useful.
I'd like to hear with my own ear the difference between FP and nitro finishes. So, I built two fairly identical guitars for this purpose.
At the moment I do FP and brushed on water based lacquer. The water based lacquer I have is a bit of an unknown quantity and I want to reduce the number of variables.
I'll more than likely move to spraying myself. The barriers are more prepping a spray booth and storage for drying guitars. I did a guitar with nitro rattle cans once and they stank the place out while drying!

That's a relief! For a moment there I thought I might be doing a distance course in french polishing! - not that I'd mind, of course.
