Ingredients: Two tables (one for the computer, one for pen and manuscript paper) Three pairs of knees (one to go under the pen table, one for the computer table and one to rest the guitar on) Two extra right hands (one for the computer mouse and one for the pen) Eyes that can zoom in and out.
Spent about two hours this morning going over and over the same bits, trying to see and hear what's going on. At the end of it all I've got about three lines of music written down (12 bars). Decided this wasn't such a good idea after all.
Unless . . . Are there any shortcuts? Am I the only who person who can't listen to something once and instantly come up with a brilliant arrangement? Is it expensive to get that music software implanted?

missclarktree - Sounds like time well spent to me Alison. And a good result too. I find it really helps to listen to the piece loads of times, 10, 20, 50 or more before even starting to think about working it out. I reckon I need to be able to hum the tune and preferably the bass line before I start transcribing. Although in truth I don't literally transcribe, I go from the recording to working it out on the guitar and hardly ever get to writing it down. Actually, you're dead right. It's a load of faff, and is the main reason why I, and a lot of other folk, write their own stuff - much easier! Keith

Somehow I don't think so, Keith!
I need everything to be written down. That's the great thing about the forum. No need to worry about forgetting how the sentence began by the time the speaker gets to the end of it - simply re-read the post as many times as necessary!

Hi! What are you transcribing? Do you have a link?

Hi! What are you transcribing? Do you have a link? I certainly do! I've done up to 0.48, then lost patience and can't quite make out some of it. She has a capo on 2nd fret. I have the music just for the tremolo bit. I didn't ask you before on that other thread, as it's a minority interest and there's an awful lot of notes in it, so don't feel obliged . I won't blame you if you take one look at it and run a 4 minute mile in the opposite direction.

Ah, what no left hand?! I am a left hand watcher, sorry!
Some-one once said to me that is how you can pick out guitarists in the audience, they are the ones fixed on your left hand (or right hand obvs for lefties)
Also I’m a steel stringer, this style confuzzles me!

Ah, what no left hand?! I am a left hand watcher, sorry! I know! How dare she hide her left hand? Thanks for the thought anyway.

Did you know you can slow youtube down? click the cog wheel (settings) next to the youtube logo on the lower bar and choose your speed.

No - I didn't know that, Keith. I did try slowing it down through Audacity, but what a faff! And then the sound quality wasn't great. That's very use to know - thanks.

Did you know you can slow youtube down? click the cog wheel (settings) next to the youtube logo on the lower bar and choose your speed. That's got to be tip of the day, if not the week, if not the year. I can see me using that a lot provided the quality is good enough. Thanks loads

Just one thing missing from your list of ingredients at the beginning of the thread Alison ... Cold compress for applying to the head after 5 minutes!
Sorry - I think I should have said 20 seconds.
Shame the video wasn't wide screen for the extra clues from that left hand. You did really, really well to get 12 bars of it written down.

Beats me how you transcribed anything without the left hand. Do you have the full name of the piece and composer? I can look in my secret resource... where there is a lot of Flamenco music...

Beats me how you transcribed anything without the left hand. Do you have the full name of the piece and composer? I can look in my secret resource... where there is a lot of Flamenco music... It's not really a piece, as such. It's an example of a flamenco form, and these are defined by their rhythm and where the emphasis falls, eg in Soleares it is on beats 3,6, 8, 10 and 12. Traditionally, people put together a group of 'falsetas', which are like a sentence of music lasting in this case 12 beats, or multiples of 12, and interspersed with bits of rhythm and other things derived from where the dancer would indicate a change.
People learn falsetas individually but there is some creativity and feel for the music in choosing which ones will flow together.
Composers - many flamenco players would be able to identify the original composer of each falseta, even when they have been drastically re-interpreted by later players.
Without being able to see her left hand it's a case of trying to play along even just a few notes, to work out where the capo is, and relying on my ears. It's probably not feasible to get it written down, but just memorise it gradually over a period of about 5 years!
