Over the past three years I have had numerous guitars. At one point I thought I had found the guitar I always dreamed of but as soon as I put a pickup in (an expensive one at that) I was really uninspired by what I heard. I ended up with two Maton acoustics and to be brutally honest they are very very good guitars - especially when used with amplification. But because of what happened next one Maton will soon be sold.
I walked into a music shop last week and saw a stunning Martin 00018E Retro. I asked if I could try this guitar out and my word it was a dream to play and was so damn lively and resonant. The bass response was sublime and the trebles just sustained and sang. I kind of wanted to buy it there and then but walked out to do some homework.
The guitar has rave reviews, all pretty much echoing my feelings, but what is important for me is the amplified sound. The guitar sports a Fishman Aura F1 which I thought looked a bit complicated but was deemed to be superb - according to all reviews. The next day I went back and asked to be left alone with the guitar and a decent amp so I could really put it through its paces. To be honest I almost new straight away I would be buying it because it shone in every department. I asked the store assistant to play it so I could hear it and he was totally in love with this guitar that I had to nearly wrench it back of him.
I bought the guitar - at a great price - and got it home. I love this thing and I have been resisting Martins for years. Of note is the newly designed neck which is a joy. The action is like butter and needed no adjusting and the build is really really nice. The top is spruce with 'real mahogany' back and sides. Interestingly, I have come to realise that I prefer mahogany over rosewood!
The pickup is hard to describe but it is state of the art and has an easy mode and performer mode. Essentially there are 9 images to choose from and an image is a recording of a Martin 00018 with a high quality mic. You have total control over EQ of each image and it is easy to operate. Again, plugged into my amp this think sounds ridiculously good.
By the way the D18 was superb as well and if I had the money that would be in my house now as well.
