I've been playing a pretty rubbish 5 string banjo for a number of years, and pining for something better, however serendipity intervened with the timely arrival of a PPI payout and availability of a banjo that matched the specs I'd been after - a 1920 Vega Tubaphone hoop with a modern, decent scale length neck made by Helmut Rheingans of Orb Banjos. I totally love it and feel pretty settled (a rare thing with me and any instrument), but the only thing that I didn't like was a significant amount of scuffing to the front of the headstock, which didn't feature even a veneer - just a solid sycamore/maple headstock scarfed onto the neck. I thought about veneering this myself, and then thought I'd wanted an excuse to visit Brook guitars since I moved down here, and this might work out... SO...I contacted Jack Smidmore who does the stunning inlay for Brook and asked if he'd be able to sort me out. Turns out the answer was yes. Jack's been an absolute pleasure to deal with, and takes lots of great pictures. I'm going to hopefully collect it tomorrow, but here's some images (another good excuse for me to try and work out image hosting...)

Very cool - but why an octopus? I imagine Gav chose an octopus as they are most intelligent cephalopods and because a cuttlefish didn't predict Spain as the winners of WC 2010. Also, they are delicious.

Very cool - but why an octopus? The Octopus turned out to be a cue to H.P. Lovecraft. gavdav I doth my virtual cap to your fine choice, one of my favourite writers.
