I've just overbalanced while carrying my guitar from one room to another and I've gone and dinged it I'm oscillating between philosophical and devastated. There's a slight depression which although presumably is irreparable isn't too obvious but as you can see at the moment it's really standing out. Any tips please on the best way to disguise it?

...but if the edges are at all sharp/likely to catch and split more finish/wood away it might worth having a very careful and gentle rub around the very edges of the ding with some very fine abrasive paper to smooth it a bit.
Other than which, philosophical is good. And refer back to previous post. But don't carry guitar anywhere soon after that.

There's a slight depression which although presumably is irreparable Reading it back, that's ambiguous. Take it to mean slight depression in the guitar AND me. Thanks Keith. Will Shiraz suffice? There are no rough edges so it's unlikely to get any worse. I presume a drop or two of similarly coloured woodstain on a cotton bud would help with the cosmetics.

Shiraz would be very acceptable, yes. The particular type of medicine is less important than the dose....
Thinking about it, I have disguised similar things with a careful dab of suitably coloured felt pen - bit more controllable than woodstain (even if on a cotton bud) though either would do. Always a bit difficult to predict the result until it's too late though... You can get specific "pens" in different colours especially for wood touch ups I think, which may take some of the guesswork out of it...?

My deepest sympathy. I can only endorse Keith's suggested anaesthetic for the pain.
The only positive is that once you have dinged a guitar you don't behave to worry so much about keeping it pristine.

Don't worry about it - guitars are made of wood and handled on a, hopefully, daily basis, therefore they gain character - finish wear, scratches, dings - all part of the story of the guitar, and it shows you've played it, loved it, and made music with it, which is what they're built for anyway!!!

Thanks for those kind words brianr2, jackorion and earwighoney. I bought it with a tiny ding (= £400 reduction) and I've added a few minor ones since, but this one is really catching my traumatized eye. I'm sure one of those touch-up pens, time and wine will assuage my distress.

Merlot is for tiny dings...and is generally drunk by those who list their guitars in their signature .. Shiraz is for those of us who accept life's accidents and live to fight another day...

Wear the "love bite" with pride. If you are still grieving go to 13.08mins on this Later with Jools episode and look at Richard Thompson's Lowden wit a huge crack on the top from the treble side bridge to the end block - that guitar has Mojo: RT LaterAlternatively carefully put an identical ding in the same place on the other side and claim it was in the wood as you can see the bookmatching. Most of all forget all of that and just play it.

I can hardly see what yer mithering about. Man up and embrace the mojo. My first ding on my fancy pants Martin was a crack where another guitar "accidentally" fell on it. I say "accidentally" because I'm pretty sure the other guitar was jealous of my new love, but I don't care. I laugh in the face of cracks. LAUGH I tell you!!!!!
