I saw the ad for this guitar in classifieds , contacted gavdav and picked it up a few days later....good to meet him also.
I've been keen to give playing a reso a try for a while...I'm hoping it will give added interest to our recordings and engender some new enthusiasm for playing in general.
The guitar sounds great! I've put some new Newtone Reso PB' s on it and have been sliding around the fretboard trying to find fills and licks ...starting to get the hang of holding the slide [ gav included a few of these in the sale ] and trying pull off's while keeping things muted behind the slide with my third and fourth fingers. Fortunately there is loads of stuff on you tube which points you the right way.
I'm already used to using fingerpicks which is a big advantage...I use propik angled brass picks which I think give a more mellow tone.
Gav also included a G and M capo which looks like a bit of mediaeval torture equipment but works really well...had a look at their website and learned that it can used either the right way up or upside down...more experimentation required!
There is a K and K reso pick up fitted too. I've tried connecting it into the second input of the Headway EDB1 preamp I use for my Nava mandocello...it needs the gain control on the channel turned to max to compensate for the pick up not being active but this doesn't create any noise and sounds absolutely lush!...fortunately the EQ settings I use for the mandocello seem to suit the reso so that is a real result.
The cone has been upgraded with a Beard cone and spider and it also has a new ebony tipped bridge ....don't know what it sounded like before but I like the sound now!
I've been using the reso tuned in either open D or DADGAD which has some nice effects for more folky stuff..
So all in all a huge success so far....thinking about something easy to record that will give me a chance to try some fills etc.
Amazing also to see the words Newtone , K and K and DADGAD in one post...
Nice low action...!
