After several months of searching a friend and I took over a small rehearsal room on Friday which is pretty reasonably priced and I've just returned from a two hours rehearsal session. It's a nice thing have somewhere where everything can be set up. And best of all its only 5 mins walk away.
Anyone else using an arrangement like this.

I understand the concept of 'studio' ... but what's this 'rehearsal' thing you're going on about?

After several months of searching a friend and I took over a small rehearsal room on Friday which is pretty reasonably priced and I've just returned from a two hours rehearsal session. In London, 'reasonably priced' local rehearsal rooms do not exist. Most rehearsal rooms that I have been too, are around £20 per hour have to be booked ages in advance, generally in blocks of 3 or 4 hours and have s***ty, broken amps and crappy PA's, awful rooms where you can hear all the other bands. Some of my mates travel for an hour or so to find a decentish one here and there. Rehearsal studio owners in London are some of the biggest charlatans around. Grrr. Mods transfer my post to C.O.G. if needs be...

Ahhh, there are some good spots. I really cannot say enough nice things about Music Room in new Cross Gate. It's a beautiful venue, a converted library with high ceilings, solid wood floors and even the old wooden staircase. You do have to book (and pay) in advance but that means they don't get plagued with cancellations and are perhaps less grumpy as a result. In fact the staff are universally lovely and in several years of dealing with them for rehearsals and hiring kit for events I've only ever had excellent service and nice things to say about them. The handfull of rooms themselves are well soundproofed, spotlessly clean, parquet floors with big rugs and all come with decent quality fully functioning PAs and lighting rigs. When you turn up for your session you'll find the requested hire kit (again all top quality, well maintained stuff) set up as well as the requested number of mics already on stands, lined up, plugged in, faders up and (this is possibly my favorite bit) with the cables neatly coiled. *quivers with OCD pleasure Outside the rooms there's a decent sized kitchen and eating area usually with Radio 6-music on in the background, they have an good good selection of drinks and snacks including a surprisingly good selection of cold beers and at least half a dozen bottled ales. There's a pleasant back garden/smoking area and more recently they've added proper a "pro shop" selling all the consumables you could want as well as actual instruments and guitars. Unbelievably, they're also one of the cheaper places to rehearse in London. If you don't need to hire drums and amps (which are all extra) you can get the biggest studio there for a 4 hour weekday evening session for £40. That's cheaper than most of the sticky, noisy decked-out-with-cheap-broken-kit competition. www.musicroomlondon.com/Honestly. I love these guys. Tell them I sent you!
