My main instrument is: probably needing new strings

I spent a very pleasant couple of hours last night in the company of Jez Lowe and Steve Tilston (and about 50 other folk including my wife and eldest daughter!) at the Fox Land Sports & Social Club in Leyland, Lancashire. No support, just the two of them - 2 x 1 hour sets with a break to refill the glasses and have a raffle in-between. It was an interesting concept - they both played (alternatively) on each others' songs. I'd forgotten how many classic songs there were in there. The 'merchandise table' was groaning under the weight of the CDs from the back catalogues of these two great songwriters and performers. A little annoyingly, there was a faint, but distinct, buzz from one of the speakers which just wouldn't go away but you could only hear it when they were introducing songs, once the music started it was drowned out. Jez played guitar, octave mandolin (or possibly cello-mandolin), occasional gob iron and, I think, a cuatro-shaped mandolin while Steve played his guitar and his new 10 string guitar (says he couldn't afford a 12-er! The evening passed very quickly - with anecdotes, ballads, humour and everything you would expect from these two. The evening closed with them singing Jez's "Old Bones" before the encore of Steve's "Slip Jigs and Reels". Given the weather I shudder to think what Steve's journey back to Hebden Bridge would be like - or what he might find when he gets there! Anyway - some of the 'standout' songs for me... Wrong Bus by Jez Lowe (written for The Radio Ballads) and, from his latest album, Grass Days by Steve Tilston (check out the Wizz Jones and Ralph McTell references)

Sounds like a fab evening Leo. Two superb performers, neither of whom I've seen perform! Must rectify that.

As a faux-songwriter it was really interesting to hear the stories (and the processes) behind some of the songs. For example, with 'Wrong Bus', Jez was saying how he'd been contacted by the producer of The Radio Ballads who told him that they had loads of great songs for the '1st World War Anniversary' project but they were all a bit gritty and sad - could Jez lighten the mood and write something 'funny'!
Jez had read, and been struck by the absurdity, that troops were sent to the front lines in a fleet of London double-decker buses which had been ferried over for exactly that purpose... without that explanation, the premise of the song doesn't make as much sense. With it...

It's seems there is no end to the quite brilliant (and likeable) musicians I've never heard of. Thanks very much
