I enjoyed that Nigel, a very good read. One of the members of my band plays a Capek mandolin- an F with oval hole, and it is one of the nicest Mandolins I've heard (other mandolins in the band inclu Pava, Vanden, and Krishot). Your article led me on a tour of his website, and wow, what beautiful banjos he makes too. His wife makes the most beautiful looking straps as well. A talented family Robbie

His wife makes the most beautiful looking straps as well. A talented family Robbie Glad you enjoyed it, I had a great time there. It's his mam who makes the straps, not his Mrs. His mam was the banjo player in the band years ago too. Rosta's Mrs helps with the business though and does the translation - she speaks great English, Rosta only has a few words. I tried one of his banjo's whilst I was there and I thought it was by far the best I'd ever played - it was one of his open back models. Beautiful in every respect. nigel www.nkforsterguitars.com

Excellent interview, Nigel. Really informative - sounds like there's mutual respect there, too (which helps!)

Excellent interview, Nigel. Really informative - sounds like there's mutual respect there, too (which helps!) Not sure he'd ever heard of me which is fine. He's very easy to get on with, as is his Mrs who does the translating. Turned out we had a couple of mutual acquaintances too - Years ago I got a copy routing machine made for doing archtops, it was made by the father of another Czech mandolin maker I'd been introduced too ten years ago - Ondra Houlbeck. Turned out Rosta trained him and Ondra had worked for Rosta for years. The feller who introduced me to Ondra was an American amateur double bass maker who lived in Prague, Drew Pitts - Rosta helped Drew get the only sale he ever had to a top American bluegrass player who was visiting the city. Small world....
