I've got new neighbours and all of a sudden I'm feeling self-conscious about practising in the evening, not knowing how much they can hear. I bought this guitar mute from www.ipdesignsltd.co.uk/11-acoustic-guitar-mute.html, 6.99 plus 90p postage; later realised it's cheaper on ebay but never mind.
It consists of two strips of foam attached to very lightweight plastic bars held together by a screw and nut which look as if they could be undone if you wanted to separate the two sides for any reason. It slides into place without dragging too hard on the strings, and mutes the strings evenly and quite effectively.
The only problem is that it's too wide for a flamenco guitar with very low action. It does touch the face of the guitar and even lifts the strings slightly, putting a little bit of pressure onto the guitar top. I'm not too worried about scratches, as it is protected by a clear tapping plate, but not too sure about applying pressure on the top, however slight.
On the classical it just about clears the guitar top, but needs to be fitted very carefully to avoid contact. In any case I don't need to mute the classical, but just tried it for fit.
On the Seagull (Maritime Folk) steel string, which I'm sorry to say is still cluttering up the front bedroom, there is plenty of clearance. It's easy to fit without touching the top.
So - it's not much use for my purposes but seems to work quite well if you have enough clearance under your strings. It's 16 or 17 mm thick, with each side being the same width so I'd say you need at least 10 mm space under your strings at the bridge.
Here's a demonstration for those who have the patience to wait until he gets round to fitting it:-
