At Tamco:  A few dings by the looks of it, but a very striking top. You get a lot of instrument for your money, as well as a pickup (assuming its the excellent Headway that is in my octave mandola) and a rather fetching carlton case that is bomb proof. Bit of a bargain for someone. I might be tempted myself if I wasn't now convinced that if I were to own a 4 string instrument myself it would be a tenor guitar (at least tenor I can play in a Jazz band- don't think bouzouiki/ mandola quite fits!) You'd get away with a bouzouki/ocatave mandolin in a klezmer band Robbie - could be fun!

I miss having a bouzouki, and I'll bet this one sounds great. Not sure I love the distinctive figure in the top, but still, it's handsome enough regardless.

Wish I had the cash. My cheap Hudson 'zouk's really good for playing counterpoint lines behind mandos, but too mushy and contained for much else.

Have never played a Tobin instrument, but they have a great reputation, and that one will be a bargain for someone I'm sure.
I have a love/hate thing with bouzoukis - love the sound, hate that I can't play them properly! Tunes are way too much of a stretchy struggle and even accompaniment seems awkward to me.
My latest experiment, as of last week, with my Fylde Octavius bouzouki is tuning it down even further (I usually have it tuned two frets down) and capoing up even further - I've got it down 4 frets now to Eb Bb F C, with a much heavier new set of unison strings (I used to mostly use octaves) and keep a capo at fret 4 most of the time to give GDAE. This has made tunes sooooo much easier that I actually enjoy playing the thing again. Even the first few position markers are right, as well. The scale length from fret four to bridge saddle is around 20"/500mm, which is more of a shortish octave mandolin scale. Accomp still works OK here, though not as rich and resonant as on a full scale zouk. Mind you, with the capo off, the lovely lowness of everything sounds a bit good. Still trying to learn more tunes properly, but at least now it's not the stretches that make it hard, just the feeble memory!

Hi Leon - the stretching problem arises when playing melody on a long-scale instrument tuned in fifths. The guitar is much more ergonomic being tuned (mostly) in fourths.

I know I am missing something, and would like to know what it is !!! Cheers Leon Leon, the difficulty I find is only in flatpicking Irish/Scottish type tunes. Guitar strings are pitched 5 or 4 frets apart. Bouzouki courses are 7 frets apart, so it's necessary to stetch or move more within the compass of any given string on zouk than it is on guitar. Also, I'm used to playing melodies on mandolin which when I transfer to zouk I find much more difficult to reach - the shorter scale capo fret 4 zouk brings the stretches back within the bounds of do-ableness. Am I explaining this understandably? Keith |
