Mrs O'C and I went to see FC last when they passed through Weston-super-Mud on their Winter tour. We've been almost every year for a while now and can't help wondering how much longer they'll keep WsM on their itinerary as the attendance seems to dwindle year by year. (Maybe due to deaths among an ageing audience...?) The lovely theatre was maybe only half-full this time. Pity, because the music was, as ever, superb and the small audience v enthusiastic.
The support act was Roger Davies, a singer-songwriter from Yorkshire (worth checking out on Youtube) whose simple, sincere and personal songs were a delight. Roger came across in a very unassuming way which won everyone over from the start. Enjoyed his half hour very much - good vocals and a great guitar sound.
Fairport cantered through their usual mix of oldies and more recent material. Peggy's bass playing is always a highlight for me - always seems to manage more notes than is humanly feasible yet remains musical and keep the pulse going too, aided by Gerry Conway's fab drumming. Chris Leslie's playing of so many instruments ensured variety to the sound, and his singing makes a good contrast with Simon Nicol. Disappointed that Simon didn't play his baby Rob Armstrong guitar though it was on stage throughout. Ric Saunders played his violin as manically as ever and managed to keep up a constant repertoire of silly walks, gestures and faces as if in his own little world on the edge of the stage.
Major highlights - Crazy Man Michael, and, inevitably, Meet on the Ledge. I find hearing them play and singing along to the latter to be a more and more emotional experience year by year.
Here's to next year!

Glad you enjoyed it, Keith and I hope there are signs of a new, youthful audience appearing next year to prop up the old fogies

Hi Keith,
I haven't booked to see them yet this year but have the last 2. They always seem to get a good turnout at Chesterfield although the theatre isn't exactly the Albert Hall. How they retain their enthusiasm and stamina is beyond me. They have another approx. 10 dates of their winter tour to go and about 20 odd in June and July.
But then I'm seeing Gordon Lightfoot on his first UK tour for 35 years in May and he is coming over 'fresh' from 22 gigs across the US in March and April and following his UK tour with another 25 odd in July and August. Talking of 'age', he is now 76 and in last 15 year was in a coma for 6 months and then later suffered a stroke whilst performing.
How do these guys do it. I'm ready for bed at 10.00 now!

I've only seen FC once and that was in 1970 at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. Supporting were Allan Taylor and Roger Ruskin-Spear's Giant Kinetic Wardrobe: a memorable evening. Richard Thompson's solo on Sloth still lives in my memory.
I don't think I would go to see them these days. I'm sorry to say I really don't like Simon Nicol's voice. COGish I know but there we are.
I have to echo your admiration for Dave Pegg though Keith. He's an astonishingly adept player.

One of my favourite little moments from the gig was during an extended plug for Cropredy Festival and would have been unexplainable before without losing the fun, but it seems someone has recorded it and put it on Youtube -
Arf, arf.

I've seen them a few times in recent years, but I still find myself wondering when Sandy is coming on. I know I live in the past, but to me FC is still Sandy, RT and Swarbs. By the way my second favourite version of Crazy Man Michael after the original one is Dave White's.! Colin

Nice review, and thanks for pointing me to a new artist. Justed listened to "Huddersfield Town" on Youtube, and I want to hear more, (And go to Huddersfield.)
