I saw this in an ebay auction, does it work? :
"There is a finish crack (see pictures) that does not follow the grain and is NOT in the wood. I can say this with certainty because it has had the ultimate test for a "wood crack". That test, which is easy to perform, involves lightly swabing Mineral Spirits on the area in question. Mineral Spirits is so super thin that it will immediately penetrate the wood if it is a crack and show inside the guitar as a "dark wet spot". It will quickly dry and you know for sure. I, as an amateur Luthier, have performed this test many, many times and this is the only time the suspect crack turned out NOT to be in the wood. Try it! But if you do, be sure you use Mineral Spirits and only Mineral Spirits. It will not hurt the finish and as I said it dries quickly. "

Hmmmm... I think this question should be referred to the forum virtuoso on the subject of cracks...Rodders! Ah yes indeed...the cracks of doom!!! Keith (edit for UK speak - "mineral spirit" = white spirit (turps substitute) - I didn't know until I Googled it! And, I have no idea whether the suggested use/test is helpful/harmful/total b*ll*cks/good info)
