Mentioned by Kim on another thread - Martin Simpson Instructional DVDs from Homespun.com I've recently got one of these - 'Alternate Guitar Tunings Demystified'. The running time of the DVD is about 90 minutes which includes 3 pieces of music for which tabs are provided in full. There is a PDF file to back up the video teaching with:- Chart of Open Tuning Relationships Cross string movement of chards between tunings Relationship of partial chords with standard tuning and between altered tunings Harmonised major scale triads. Those TABS I mentioned. It is not a course that tells you what notes to play, but it works well as a course that does what it says on the tin. It demystifies. He succeeds in turning these altered tunings into something easier and more musically enhancing than standard tuning. The emphasis is on giving you the outline that allows you to explore on your own and the exploration of the way he plays from the tabs will help in that explration. It obviously covers some of the same type of territory as his book (+ shorter DVD) "Martin Simpson teaches alternate tunings" link here but the two work well as complementary to each other. I find I gain positive knowledge from both. This new one is mainly a DVD with an accompanying PDF, the earlier one is mainly a book with an accompanying DVD. Highly recommended. I've found that it's easy to find myself forgetting about the lesson on this new DVD and just listening to Martin Simpsons playing and enjoying the beautiful sounds a guitar makes in his hands. Mark

It is not a course that tells you what notes to play, but it works well as a course that does what it says on the tin. It demystifies. I agree that this was excellent for gaining an understanding of how all the tunings are related. It really helps that the entire 90 minutes is very 'musical' because of Martin Simpson's skills. I found this to be really useful paired with the Doug Young book 'Understanding DADGAD ...' www.dougyoungguitar.com/books.phpBoth of these put some *cough* theory underneath the tunings, which is slowly starting to make some sort of sense. It's an interesting progression for Martin Simpson's instructional body of work, too. The very early DVDs had a gentle introduction to dropped D, then they migrated towards DADGAD and onward into his now favourite Csus2 and related tunings. I don't think I could have got my head around the C tuning variations when I was still struggling with very basic right and left hand coordination. Kym

Simpson's system for understanding these tunings is the best I've ever come across. And remember, he has been teaching this stuff for over 30 years or so now! He lays things out in a very clear style.
