I bought this banjo, which usually sells for upward of £600, for £270 a few months ago. It's a Recording King RK R36 with mahogany back and neck and seriously good Gibson Mastertone-style flange and tone ring. It's fair to say it had been in something of an abusive relationship as regards set up, with the head tightened so much it's a wonder it didn't pop, but everything else was in good nick. After a couple of hours of messing and swapping in a corrected bridge it sounds absolutely great, with a rich, full sound.

Congrats Pete!
Nice to know it's still possible to get a bargain. Used guitars often seem to sell for silly money on auction listings nowadays, and sellers certainly tend to ask far too much on their BIN prices.

...the jingle bells are a bit worrying.... The Boy asked me to record an archive of my own songs and "the things you do at Christmas," upon which I began to suspect that he has no musical ear whatsoever. I told him that if I did he'd have to play tambourine and sleigh bells on some recordings. He did try, bless his little attempted beard, but didn't seem able to keep time, thus reinforcing the idea that he has no musical ear whatsoever.

Ebay and Amazon are becoming very similar, these days.

I really like that, Pete. Recording King is a great revived brand - not expensive as such, but already with a reputation for good quality instruments.
I played one of the models similar to that when I was in Wunjo's a few years back and thought it was excellent.

Congrats on landing yourself a bargain, Mr Decay. I bet it's relieved to have gone to a good home.

Even more encouragingly, proof that you can sell even a banjo on eBay...

Good score!
I assume you have technical reasons for not adopting the Dewey Decimal system but have you considered alphabetisation or even a simple colour-coded presentation of your library?

Good score! I assume you have technical reasons for not adopting the Dewey Decimal system but have you considered alphabetisation or even a simple colour-coded presentation of your library? Please don't remind me. Years ago there was a system of categorisation and alphabetisation, but after a flood they were bundled up in bin liners and literally thrown in the back of a van to be moved to this "lifeboat" house. The same went for records, CDs, DVDs and the mountain of magazines and clippings that I "need" in my life. Now the prospect of putting thousands of items into any sort of order is too much to contemplate, so things stay where they land. I've even had to buy books I have again because I've needed them for work.

Ebay and Amazon are becoming very similar, these days. Yup. Same sellers on Amazon as Ebay, but for some reason I trust the Amazon brand more. I'm so impressionable I should hire myself out to advertising agencies as a test subject. It's nice to see you back here, in one of the warmer backwaters of the web. I effectively left most of the internet behind, but I had to come back here in the end.

I played one of the models similar to that when I was in Wunjo's a few years back and thought it was excellent. Yeah, they're like Vintage in that they produce a bewildering variety of instruments but you never seem to find a really bad one among them. I remember telling you that I resisted selling my '70s Deering, despite the slight wow I heard that nobody else seemed to. Well, I relented, I did sell on approval - and it came back. The lad who took it finally heard the wow and had it looked over again. Turns out it needs a new neck, with all the expense that implies. The beast does have sentimental value so I was quite happy to get it back and I may even get the neck done some day. In the meantime the Recording King fills all my banjoing needs.
