I've recorded a short video to show my pickup - it's passive, so no battery involved. Two SBTs are wired to the ring and a UST wired to the tip. What would cause this kind of hum? When it was installed, it would hum like that unless I held onto the end of the TRS cable where it plugged into the end jack. Could the solder joints on the end pin have anything to do with it? There are no kinks or tears in the cables' shielding and it's not an old pickup.

If the hum disappears when you touch a metal bit then it's likely to be an earthing problem somehow, somewhere.
Maybe holding the plug/socket is enough to jiggle things properly into contact?
Your jack plug may not be making proper contacts inside the endpin socket - try several leads - the tip shapes often vary slightly. Also, if you can get inside the endpin socket you can bend the contacts a little.
Does the hum appear with either just the SBTs or just the UST connected, or is it only when you have everything joined up?

Thank you for replying Keith. I've tried various cables, both TRS and a stereo Y cable. I can get to the contacts as I've taken the whole thing out. The hum is intermittent rather than consistent, so it's difficult to pinpoint. I'll do some trouble shooting with bending contacts etc. and see if that helps.

The hum really sounds like an earth problem or a dodgy contact. I have this problem on my OM which needs new pickup.
I can see you are having real problems with this pickup. I'd be inclined to replace it!

I'd be inclined to replace it! It's new from David Enke, formerly of Pickup the World. He's not responding to any of my messages, so I contacted PUTW. Turns out he left in 2014 so what I have is a David Enke Pickup (albeit exactly the same thing) and PUTW won't replace it because I got it directly from David. I'm up the creek without a paddle. I just had an Anthem installed and it's early days, but initial tests were very positive. More on that in another thread. It's a shame because the PUTW trio sounded superb for all of a week before it started earth humming, and totally passive as well.

Once you start playing with electrics and amplification there is seldom much pure joy :-(
