My copy of this long awaited collaboration between two of my favourite players, Ralph McTell and Wizz Jones, dropped through the letterbox this morning.
I've just given it a first listen through and, unsurprisingly, I do like it a lot. The recorded sound is natural, with lots of lovely guitar sounds, 6 and 12 string, and there's even a banjo in there from time to time too. Some excellent vocal harmonising from both, though a couple of the higher bits from Wizz didn't do it for me.
This isn't an album with Ralph doing Ralphy things accompanied by Wizz, alternating with Wizz doing Wizzy things accompanied by Ralph. It's more like a couple of your chums, albeit super-talented ones, coming round to yours and bashing through stuff they have in common - a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
In truth, this does result in there being something of a lowest common denominator feel to the whole thing - the songs are not the greatest, but they are probably the best versions you're likely to hear, well sung and superbly played. Ralph is in especially good voice, and Wizz's thumb is very evident in many places. (No, not those places - go and stand in the corner for the rest of the afternoon ... ... face the wall. That's better.)
I found that listening to this album really lifted my spirits and made me smile - what more could I ask?
And earlier in the week, tickets for Ralph at the Brewhouse theatre in Taunton arrived, yay! Not till October though. I'll be listening to this CD in the meantime, and will also dig out my Ralph LPs and seek out a song or two I've not recorded yet.

Love Wizz, and have a few of his albums. Might have to add this one to the collection now!

I heartily concur with your assessment, ocarolan. It's not ground breaking or mind-blowing, but (having listened to it just the once) it's more than just 'pleasant'. I'm sure that both McT and WJ are more than happy with it - and I am, too. I can see myself listening to it a lot over the coming days and weeks.
