We went to this gig to see Mary whose music I have occasionally listened too but her initial reputation as 'country' might have put me off, this not being my favourite genre. I'm so glad I didn't let this deter us as we were treated to a wide mixture of beautiful music. Since 2000 her music has been described as 'cross-genre' and so it was, ranging at one extreme from folk/country ballads to light rock (almost Suzie Quattro style'). Her songs cover every element in a range from nostalgic to melancholy to appreciation of the world we live and love in. She herself is an accomplished acoustic guitarist and it was interesting to hear her talk a little about the main guitars she played, where she bought them and their history.
She had a constant exchange of instruments as she uses many different tunings. She was equally at home with her excellent band supporting her music as she was playing solo with just the acoustic guitar. She obviously promoted a new album out this year but the mix of numbers sounded excellent.
She is a lovely lady with a superb rich voice, very natural and grounded.
The tour lasts another 10 days or so, mainly in the north. Tickets weren't cheap at £30 but it was a full house and she gave the audience a great concert.
