I was faffing about with something the other day trying to take some measurements and I realised what I really needed was a vernier gauge and that a digital one with a clear large readout would be even better. I started looking on line and was astounded with the range of prices for items that all looked pretty similar. Can anyone help me with some recommendations or with what to avoid Andy

Make sure whichever one you get has an 'OFF' button otherwise you'll be forever changing batteries. Make sure you can set to zero at any position on the scale.
Remember they're useless if the battery fails - look for one with dual manual/digital reading - I have a digital one which hasn't been used for a few years...........

I've got one that looks like Martin's, although I've mislaid it for the time being so can't check if it's exactly the same brand.
If you can't remember whether you have a .012 or .013 1st string, in my experience this may not be quite good enough. But it might teach you to keep the strings packet handy so you don't have to measure it again.
