The main reason why I am entering this competition is because I'm looking to launch myself as a solo instrumentalist. Throughout my secondary school career I have built up an impressive amount of musical experiences as part of one of groups and as an accompanist. For 5 years I have been playing to 100-600 people audiences and it has been great. I've even had the chance to compose a song that was used for the school's olympics and appeared on the news in the torch race. All very exciting stuff musically for a 16 year old. However, I now feel I need to start something for myself with all of my own music.
I have a few songs (one of which was more testing out a new pickup than an actual song) on the following link:
soundcloud.com/gideon-casey
I am a finger style guitarist and started with classical guitar and apply those techniques to my steel string playing. My influences for my songs are artists such as Martin Simpson, Andrew York and Ben Howard. I like to fuse more traditional melodic structures with aspects of blues and more modern influences.
Having the Samhradh would mean that I am able to begin my steps into creating my own music on my own instruments and I don't have a steel string acoustic guitar of my own. I have used my dad's Taran in the recordings but as it is not my guitar I need my own guitar that I can take to gigs, recording sessions and any other things I may need it for. My future musical plans are to start doing gigs around Hampshire in the many folk clubs in the county. Also I want defy the conventions of the usual steel string guitarist and play classical guitar songs during these gigs as well. I believe that the classical guitar needs to be revived with a modern twist! In the long term I hope to become a distinguished musician and perhaps form a band as I move higher in education.
Music is my passion and the guitar, in all its forms, is my passion. Having this guitar will start my serious musical career. Being 16 years old, I have a lot to learn and I could have this guitar to take on my journey.
I am happy to answer any questions that anyone may have!
Thank you for reading.

Hi Gideon - welcome to the Forum, and well done for entering this competition.
Hope you'll enjoy being on the Forum and take advantage of all it has to offer - there's a huge range of experience and ability represented here from beginner to pro, and in a variety of styles. Solo fingerstyle is well represented here, so you're sure to find something of interest, and hopefully make a few friends too. You'll find quite a number of solo fingerstyle tunes (I use the word "song" to mean items with words that are sung) posted here - some on Dave White's guitars, and some on Tarans too, though many other instruments are represented as well.
I'm looking forward to listening to your music shortly. Do you have any gigs planned in the near future? Have you made any videos of your playing? All the best with your music.
Keith

to the forum, Gideon and good luck in the contest. I've had a quick listen to a couple of your Soundcloud tracks and there's some good playing there, with interesting ideas. Hope you stick around here and get involved when you have the time

I'm hoping to start looking for some gigs once I have done a bit more writing and composing; a more substantial set list is definitely needed. Also, I think I will try some "sing arounds" and other similar things just to get some more knowledge of playing in that sort of environment.
I hope to have some videos of me playing up on youtube very soon!

Gideon, Welcome to the Competition. I's a shame your dad won't let you gig with the Taran - what spoilsports parents can be Are "Dark Shore" and "Long Railroad" your own pieces? They are moody and atmospheric - what inspired them? Best thing to do is jump in feet first to any open mics or other gigs like that - get the nerves thing over and you'll start to enjoy it as it becomes addictive. Good luck with gigs and please post any new stuff you record on this thread.

Hi Gideon - love your music and philosopohy. We seem to have a similar approach to playing, i.e classical guitar with no boundaries. I also have a Picado, a C1, and play a lot of York on it and also on my steel string guitars. Andrew York crosses and changes between the two... Sunburst was written on a steel string.
Do you have any recordings on your Picado? I visited the workshop many times as it's not far from my home, Angel, the shop manager and master luthier, is a great guy.
Dave's guitars are a real pleasure to play and an inspiration.
Good luck with competition.

Good luck with gigs and please post any new stuff you record on this thread. Its the setback of having a dad who plays as well!! Both of them are my compositions. The first was inspired by much of Martin Simpson's work; fusing tradition melodies with blues melodies. This is what I wanted to come across in the piece. The steady beat reminded me the "chugging" of an old american steam train, which is where the name comes from. The second came from experimenting in the CGCGGC tuning, which is what artist Ben Howard uses for many of his songs. Much of his music is really haunting and as I used this tuning Dark Shore came together. I think its very easy to have very repetitive and boring song with just and instrumental guitar, so I've tried to make it atmospheric and interesting to keep away from the trap of instrumental music. I will definitely do some open mic nights. I think they are a good way to begin making my reputation in the area! Thanks for your kind words and I will definitely be uploading more tracks!

That's really interesting to find out because I am learning sunburst at the moment an I thought it could transfer over very nicely. The only issue is I much prefer the larger nut width for the song! I need to get a good microphone to start recording with my picado because I have got lots of songs that I play on that. I should have some up soon so do look out for that! How lucky to live so near to it! I considered going to visit as it is not far from my family and various places I have stayed in France, however I fear I would place an order if I see any more of their guitars (especially a flamenco one!!). Thanks for you helpful information and kind words! Gideon

New upload on soundcloud. This is a piece inspired by John Butler's Ocean and was recorded on an Ashton 12-string. The tuning is Csus2 with a capo on the 2nd fret. This was composed and recorded today but its a result of some impulse inspiration. soundcloud.com/gideon-casey/waves

Gideon, The John Butler Trio and "Ocean" in particular are a big thing in the De Faoite household and that's a brave choice to tackle and be inspired by - you should take this piece and develop it more. Nice watery atmosphere going on but the "stormier" section at the end needs to come in earlier I think to give the piece more drive. It would also be worthwhile experimenting with some additional slide guitar over it. What was the recording set up - I'm hearing some piezo "quackiness" and if you are going via a pickup it would be interesting to experiment with it recording it purely acoustically through a microphone. Good stuff
