Is it possible to turn a bass into an electric guitar, or should I just learn to play the bass as well? I guess I would un bolt the neck and bolt on an electric, but then the bridge would be in the wrong place,

The electrics aren't quite the same either - best to leave it as a bass. It's easy to learn if you play guitar, the bottom four strings of which are tuned the same way as the four strings on a bass.

Learn to play bass. You can make an easy start by just playing the root note of the chords and add a little more when you get the hang of it.

In my experience it was always the bass player that got the best groupies as well, so definitely learn the bass.
