I nipped along to Bury (well, Tottington) to see Riverman in action last night at the Bury Songwriters' Circle at Halshaw Sports Club.
Meeting in a decent size function room, with its own entrance and bar the 'circle' was quite informal - there weren't as many folk there as there might have been, plenty of space, which meant that I got a seat near the front (seats arranged around tables).
The evening was split into two halves: in the first half the 3 resident performers (I'm guessing there!) and Richard sat in a line on the stage area, nicely spotlighted, and took it in turns to play a song each. Richard started off with songs from his EP: "It's Called The Blues", "Zero" and, ermmm, another one, before there was a brief intermission during which I annoyed the regulars by winning the raffle.
The second half was all Riverman (although he invited a gob-iron fella up for a couple of songs). He played another 8 songs (I think) at least some of which I hope will be on his forthcoming album (due in 2025 by the sounds of it!). Here's hoping he sings the 'Goodfellas' song at Halifax!
I'm pleased to say that his recently lacerated hand stood up to the test really well. Yesterday was the first time he'd played in 4 weeks or so but you couldn't tell. His ragtime/blues were as precise as ever and his voice came over really well. It goes against the grain somewhat to say it but a teeny bit of amplification wouldn't have gone amiss as his wordery really does need to be heard. I'm glad I was sitting near the front
Not just sitting near the front but also sitting next to Phil Taylor who'd come along for the evening, too. Always good to meet up with fellow members
Jane (Richard's wife) recorded the complete second set on an iPad - maybe that'll be available somewhere... He used one of his Martin guitars for everything and it sounded lush.
Well worth the fiver entry fee.
