Has anyone ever replaced their fingerboard, or had someone else do it for them?
how big a deal is it? Why would you do it (the cause) and would there be any issues afterwards?
There's a guitar I was looking at, but the seller advised he'd had the ebony fingerboard replaced by a luthier, and I just wondered how common this would be and if if would adversely affect anything about the guitar.
it was done when the guitar was around 16 years old.

As an update, I've been told that the truss rod broke, and the Luthier recommended replacing the fretboard with a slightly thicker one while he had the chance.

... Luthier recommended replacing the fretboard .... What, Luther the brilliant but emotionally impulsive detective who is tormented by the dark side of humanity while hunting down murderers? I imagine he's a bit rough on fingerboards...

Surlely it was Luther the reformist... It's not well known but, of his 95 theses, at least 12 related to guitar care and maintenance. Fingerboard replacement was #27.

Sorry about that, Martin; got carried away. I would have thought that, if it's been glued on properly (i.e. it doesn't look as if it'll fall off), there shouldn't be any problems. As you'll know from reading lots of build-threads, it's only a piece of wood glued on to another piece of wood and there's a very big gluing area and not too much stress on the join - unless the truss-rod has had an awful lot of adjustment. If the luthier is anything like me, it might be worth checking that the harmonic at the 12th fret matches the fretted note but I don't really think they'd make that sort of mistake. The same with the fretting, really; if they look well-seated, then they probably are well seated. Finally, since he's changed the thickness, you'd need to be sure you felt the action was all right around the 12th fret and look along the fingerboard to see that it's straightish but obviously with a little bit of relief (i.e. a slight concave bow). To listen to me, you'd think I knew what I was talking about, wouldn't you? Wait and see if anyone jumps in and says, "What the hell's that bloke talking about?" If they do, they're probably right.

Has the truss rod been replaced or just a thicker fretboard added? I'd ask why it wasn't possible to match the original...

I think the fingerboard had to be removed to sort the broken truss rod, and they took the chance to replace the fingerboard while it was off. The work was carried out by Terry Docherty, and a fine job he has made of it too
