Here's the beautiful octave mandola built for me by Dave Carless, my old friend from the Crewe Folk Club days. Dave has made a handful of instruments: guitars, dulcimers, a mandolin and a bowed psaltery. He says he made the mandolin as a practice run for the mandola! As far as I'm concerned it was time well spent. As well as being very pleasing on the eye it's extremely skilfully crafted and entirely accurate. It has a spruce top, zebra-wood back and sides, sapele and ash neck (check out that carving!) and American black walnut fingerboard. The pale mark on the scratch-plate has somehow crept into the photo - it doesn't exist. Now for a lot of practising ::)
