I found this interesting - not for everyone perhaps. The program has a lot of 'samples', and describes this type of singing as a big influence on folk and gospel music. It's a bit weird as it has a two minute news insert half way through - so you get that for free:) There's a sad aspect - it looks as if this type of singing is dying out. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04csc82(Good old BBC, making programmes like this) Martin

I love the Gaelic psalm singing. I'm in a very small minority up here in Scotland though. Most folk don't like it at all. I'm not religious by the way. It's nothing to do with that for me. Those strange, rather dissonant harmonies remind me of the singing of South African tribes. Remember the film Zulu? Spine-tingling sound.

It was an interesting programme Martin. And the singing seemed a lot more "real", of and from the people, than overblown trad Anglican Psalm "singing".

Keith Keith The 'real', I think, is one of the things that gives it that 'something'. The Roscoe Holcomb video, (recently posted by Martin, has something similar. There is a quote at the beginning of the documentary that goes something like "we're not singing for people". It raises the whole area of trying to 'impress' through music, even gospel singers can fall into this trap, I think. Pure singing - can't beat it:) Martin.

That was very interesting. I enjoyed the singing, but also love Anglican chants - in fact I can't listen to them on account of they're too emotional.

I must let Lyle hear this . There is something very enchanting and soothing about Gaelic . I am enjoying the challenge of learning to play along to it as its different to the other kind of songs Ive learned before . I really enjoyed this , thanks for posting .
