Cara D is out on tour currently ...presenting a Christmas concert largely featuring songs from her new album "Upon a Winter's Night".
The Phoenix is a smallish venue with comfortable tiered seats ensuring a good view of the performers wherever you are seated.
The stage set was perfect...flickering candles [v realistic LED's] with minimalist Christmas trees lit with blue lights from above....together with all the instruments on their stands and a general buzz of anticipation from the audience it felt like a special evening was in store.
The '"band" took their places and then Cara came on dressed as on the new CD pics...Wow!!
The first half just flowed by...40 mins of bliss...Cara at the top of her game ...end of [as they say these days ]
Then there was a 20 minute break...comfort stop for the audience generation.
I should mention the " Band"...
Sam Lakeman [guitar and electric piano] , Niall Murphy [fiddle] ,Luke Daniels [accordion/twinkly bits/GSOH] and John Smith [the famous American one I think...although everyone has a beard these days]...
JS sang TDF [to die for] harmonies in "Silent Night"...otherwise was a bit superfluous IMHO...the album has a bouzouki player [James Fagan] who adds much more to the mix...again IMHO.
Cara returned in an Emerald green party dress... Wower!!!
We thought ..this is going to "rock"...we are quite trendy these days..
It just didn't...after only 30 mins [9.30pm] C said thanks for coming etc , did their bows and left the stage.
They came back and Niall/Luke played a brilliant "festive" tune together which produced the biggest applause of the evening...
The finale was "Morning Star"...enthusiastic but not too tight..
We walked back to the nearby car park at 9.45 pm avoiding gangs of "stag/hens" , beggars in doorways and piles of ...Wed night...Exeter ...
A tad disappointed...but I'm sure they'll bring it all together as the tour progresses..
