Can anyone give me some advice on the best instrument microphones for home recording that won't have a massive impact on my wallet? £200 is probably the maximum I would got to.
Thanks,
Gideon

I used to own a couple of AKG C1000S mics. They had phantom power and seemed good quality to me. You could get a couple of those for less than £200.
If you want to use a PC/Mac to record, you will need a USB or firewire interface. That's going to add to the cost.

I had an AKG C1000S which I used for the instrument recording in conjunction with a Rode NT 1A for vocals (still use that) ...I always thought that it [the AKG] sounded fine and gave good results (usually readily available pretty much unused on e bay) and had the advantage of working with or without the need for phantom power (built in battery). They seem to be a bit of a "marmite' mic...although I suspect a bit of recordosnob :-S comes into that too! Someone on the AL forum described the AKG as only being useful if you've misplaced your hammer...certainly they are quite heavy but I think that was a tad harsh. Good point re the extras Ross...as well as an interface you need to add in mic stand(s) and reasonable quality leads...if you are using smallish mics (like the NT5's) you can get an adapter for the stand which will enable you to use both mics on the same stand using "XY" positioning which makes the practicalities of recording simpler..

Dave's suggestion of a small digital recorder that can be used as a USB microphone makes sense in many ways - quality is fine, eliminates the need for interfaces/mixers etc, and you gat a portable go anywhere recorder into the bargain. I'm quite happy with my now ancient Zoom H2 used as a USB mic, and the newer versions give more options re mic postionings I think.
Keith
Andrew - would you like me to edit the crossed out bit to read normally?

+1 on Keith's Zoom suggestion...lots of folk get amazing results using these. If you have a Mac / I pad etc then an Apogee Mic is another possibility...heard some great recordings using these...again no interface required. www.apogeedigital.com/products/mic.phpAnd yes please Keith!

I'm with Keith regarding digital recorders. My Tascam DP-004 allows 4 track recording with bouncing down and, despite its size, has excelent built in mics. If I could I'd use it all the time, the only problem being that its small display lacks a backlight and is difficult to manage with my poor eyesight, so it's reduced to recording songwriting fragments now.
My present solution is a Samson G track. It plugs in via USB, has an input for direct recording of guitar electronics as well as a very good mic, and allows realtime monitoring whilst making overdubs through its headphone output. As a bonus it comes with Sonar Cakewalk LE, which is versatile and capable recording software, if rather complex. I've taken to recording in the simpler (and free) Audacity and transferring to Sonar for editing.
A similar device is the Blue Microphones Yeti, which has switchable multi-directional mics and produces similarly good recordings, but I can't recommend that unreservedly because my mate had to RMA his within a month or so.

How did you manage that Martin? Top level secret weapons?
Even Brenda couldn't scare it into submission!
But thanks! Keith

Using square brackets in a post is dangerous The editor confused the bracketed (s) used in the post with the strikethrough BBCode it seems.

The matched pair Rode NT5 would be good. But I agree about the c1000 - don't underestimate them. If I get a chance this weekend I'll try and record a few clips.
