As francis has no doubt mentioned, those headstock designs both encourage the strings to run through the nut in a fairly straight line, which limits the tendency for the strings to catch - though of course they wouldn't catch in Francis's immaculately filed nut anyway! I'm assuming, by the way, that that isn't the actual finished rosette...

The headstock shape you've chosen looks familiar

I'm assuming, by the way, that that isn't the actual finished rosette... You're right of course. The strings will have a clean run from nut to tuner. And, with the rosette Francis used photoshop, or some such function, to create three options to give an impression of the end result in order for me to decide which way to go. J

You really can't beat Gotoh 510s, particularly if you are playing in alternate tunings.

You really can't beat Gotoh 510s, particularly if you are playing in alternate tunings. The plan from the start was to tune the new guitar to DADGAD. I already struggle with standard tuning ( ) so methinks DADGAD will do for now. If I do achieve anything decent with it I may try something else later. As regards the Gotoh's, i'd already read that they are great tuners but didn't have a particular thought in mind that I wanted them. But they looked so fantastic on Francis' archtop that I thought for the sake of a few extra pounds it would be well worth it. Shallow or what. John

Time for an update. This is the final rosette design. And various linings pics. As you can see things are moving on. We've had lots of chats about string gauges bearing in mind the planned low tuning. Also Francis did a couple of mock ups of purfling suggestions for me to decide on. There've already been a couple of minor changes. I asked Francis to include an extra strap button. And he also asked if i'd like carbon fibre strips to be fitted within the neck either side of the truss rod for extra stability. I said yes because i'm more than happy to be guided in regard to stuff like that. John

Update. It's not immediately obvious but the sharp eyed amongst you will have noticed a slightly off colour area the shape of a triangle on the left of this image. Francis assured me it will not look out of place when the guitar's finished . First two are front and back pre sealer, the last two are side and back after first sealer coat. Not bad eh ? Huge plaudits to Francis. And all pics are courtesy of Mr Milsom. Definitely not me. I'd have needed a hell of a camera to get pics of that quality from 50 or so miles . John
