Hi,
Off to see Pitmen Poets in Mansfield on Sunday. Bob Fox, Billy Mitchell, Jez Lowe and Benny Graham telling tales through verse and song to celebrate the triumphs, tragedy, humour and hard times of mining in the North East. Should be a great night and take me back to my roots. Tour continues for about another 2-3 weeks I think. Why eye man!

Really very nice but could you explain the part played by the man in the cap?

Really very nice but could you explain the part played by the man in the cap? Pure ornamentation (!!) on this piece but on others accordion and vocals mainly.

Hi,
just an update on this as I went to see the Pitmen Poets last night. It was nearly a full house, which for Mansfield on a Sunday night is quite an achievement. But with Mansfield being pretty much the epicentre of the major problems in the 80s perhaps its not surprising.
We were treated to 2 hours of great singing; deep mellow north-east vocals and a wide range of songs and the occasional free verse tracing the history of the mines from the early days with 6-year old kids down the pit to the closures in the 80s and 90s. Bob Foxes vocals were particularly rich and Jez Lowe's fingerstyle guitar excellent along with his citerne. Billy Mitchell added a lot of humour and mandolin and guitar work whilst Benny Grahams very strong Geordie dialect would have been a struggle for the uninitiated but it didn't seem to matter as the lyrical roll of the words shone through. The harmonies in their vocals were excellent.
They are coming to the end of their 2017 tour in a few days; if you can catch them its well worth it; quite a different evening in many ways.
